Accountancy & tax

Numbers you can build a business on.

We keep the books tidy, the filings on time and the advice in plain language — so the finance side of your business becomes the quiet part, not the frightening one.

Services

Everything an independent business needs from its accountant, under one engagement and one fixed fee.

Bookkeeping

Your administration kept current and correct, with a monthly summary in language you do not need an accountant to read.

Tax returns

Income tax, VAT and corporate returns prepared and filed on schedule — with the thinking done early enough to still matter.

Annual accounts

Year-end figures prepared properly and explained in one sitting: what happened, why, and what to do about it.

Payroll

Payslips, declarations and employment changes handled quietly in the background, every month, without drama.

Advisory

Hiring your first employee, buying a van, changing legal form — the moments where an hour of advice pays for a year of fees.

A good accountant makes the finance side of your business the quiet part.

About the firm

Harland & Mees works exclusively with independent businesses: founders, freelancers, family firms. Small enough that you always speak to the person who knows your file; deliberate enough that nothing is filed at the last minute.

Our clients tend to stay. We think that is because we explain rather than mystify, we flag problems while they are still small, and we treat your money with the same caution we treat our own.

  • Fixed monthly fee, agreed upfront
  • Responses within one working day
  • Your file, always current
  • No jargon between us

What customers say

  • They explain the numbers instead of just filing them. I understand my own business better than I did two years ago.

    Ilse K.
  • Straight answers about what we can and cannot claim, given before the deadline rather than after it.

Common questions

What happens in a first conversation?
We ask what the business does and what you find hardest about the paperwork. You leave knowing what working together would involve, whether or not you go ahead.
Do you explain things, or just file them?
Explaining is the work. Numbers you do not understand cannot help you decide anything, and deciding things is the point of having them.
How much of my time will this take?
Less than doing it yourself, and more predictably. We would rather ask for what we need once, clearly, than send a fortnight of small questions.
Can you take over from another accountant?
It is a normal handover and we deal with the other side directly. You should not have to referee a conversation between two accountants.
